Most stomach bugs pass—but dehydration and “can’t-miss” conditions can show up fast in children.
Bring your child to the ER right away if vomiting or diarrhea comes with:
Trouble breathing, blue/gray lips, or they look very ill
Hard to wake, unusually confused, or very weak
Seizure
Signs of dehydration, especially:
No urine / fewer wet diapers, very dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes, or they can’t keep fluids down
Blood in vomit or stool, or black/tarry stool
Bright green (bile) vomiting
Severe or worsening belly pain, a firm/rigid belly, or pain that won’t settle (especially with fever)
If you think this is life-threatening, call 911.
Get urgent ER care sooner if:
Baby is under 3 months and has vomiting/diarrhea plus any fever (100.4°F / 38°C or higher)
Your child has a weakened immune system (chemo, transplant meds, immune disorders)
They have diabetes, complex medical conditions, or they’re not keeping up with fluids
Why vomiting & diarrhea can become serious
Most cases are caused by viruses and clear with time. The real danger—especially in kids—is dehydration (losing too much fluid and salts), which can escalate quickly if a child can’t drink enough to keep up.
ER or urgent care?
Choose the ER when there are red flags (dehydration, blood, bile-green vomit, severe belly pain, extreme sleepiness, breathing trouble, seizure, or very young infant with fever).
Consider pediatrician/urgent care if symptoms are mild, your child is alert, drinking, and urinating normally—and there are no red flags.
What you can do at home (when symptoms are mild)
Focus on hydration first. Use an oral rehydration solution (ORS) and give small, frequent sips (or spoonfuls) rather than large drinks at once.
Watch urine/wet diapers, energy level, and ability to keep fluids down. If those worsen, don’t wait.
Avoid forcing food early; appetite usually returns after hydration improves.

Yes. We offer on-site CT scans, digital X-rays, and a full laboratory, so most tests and results are done during your visit.

Urgent care handles minor illnesses/injuries. ERs have advanced imaging, lab, medications, and emergency physicians for time-sensitive or severe conditions (e.g., chest pain, severe abdominal pain, serious injury, difficulty breathing).
Yes. If inpatient care or surgery is required, we coordinate a direct transfer to the appropriate hospital.
